The Anniversary Dance is becoming quite popular with majority of the weddings we play for. I can’t think of an instance where this wasn’t well received by the guests. The dance is like a mini event during your wedding reception. This dance requests ALL married couples do the dance floor. Yes, even the newly weds! Typically the newlyweds will select a song for this in advance, but it is not uncommon for them to leave it for DJ’s choice. At the last wedding the couple chose Colour My World by Chicago. Once it looks like everyone that is participating is on the dance floor the song starts, and then the magic begins. Throughout the song the MC will announce people to leave the floor if they have been married for 5 years or less, then 10 years, etc. The goal is to have the longest married couple finishing out the song.

Why would I do this at my wedding?

The purpose is to celebrate love. (It’s why we are at the wedding reception in the first place). To celebrate all of the married couples and of course the longest married couple for their love and dedication to each other for the years of marriage. It provides #marriagegoals for everyone in attendance. Lastly, to obtain some other type of engagement for guests that otherwise wouldn’t have left their seats during typical wedding festivities.

Should I have an Anniversary Dance at my wedding?

From S1M’s perspective, it is YOUR wedding. You can do anything and everything or nothing at all but music. (Gotta have music) We have played for weddings that has had things like the Shoe Game to weddings that didn’t have a first dance. It is as it always has been your choice to layout the evening; Just like picking out flowers or invitations. If you are asking me my opinion, It will be a resounding yes, however also depends on your guest and the number of guests. If you are doing a dinner party for 35 guests including children, then probably not. However, I will say, I should have had one at my wedding.

Marriage is a a beautiful thing for a couple to share. Of course, there are trying times, but there are times that would make you know it doesn’t get any better than this. Those are the memories that teach us how precious time with our significant other is.
