Matthew and Brittany - Smiles for Miles

Matthew and Brittany

Normally we feature a recent wedding, however this one was too good not to. In February of 2017 Tommy and I have the privilege to play for our friend's wedding. Normally playing music for people you directly know, or family gets dicy, but this one was different. Matthew and Brittany gave us some music that they enjoyed and that they thought their guests would like. The energy level at this wedding reception could be felt miles away.

Before I tell you details about the night, let me set the scene for you.

Their wedding reception was held at The Arbor Room at Popp Fountain which is described as a 'Chic Modern' event venue. Floor to ceiling windows on side and floor to ceiling curtains on the opposite which work out great for the up-lighting Matthew and Brittany opted to have. The ceilings had swooping drapes that the motion lighting emphasized during dinner. Lastly, their Monogram was fantastically bold shinning down to the center of the dance floor.

The Matthew and Brittany entered into the reception going straight into their first dance. (their entrance is my favorite moment of the night, The smiles on their faces was of such joy that isn’t seen too often these days.) They selected “All I See” by Mutemath. Matthew mentioned to me that the reason for them choosing that particular song as their first dance was because Mutemath formed in New Orleans and he and Brittany grew to love the band together and “All I See” just resonated to them as a couple. I’ve never heard the song before however it was a great selection and really made the moment. Brittany then danced with her father to “Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cooke. Matthew danced with his mother to “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon, (which I haven’t heard in several years).

We started easy while people were still eating and conversing with some songs like “Want to Want Me” - Jason Derulo, “Shutup and Dance” - Walk The Moon and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” - Whitney Houston. The dance floor ALWAYS had people on it, however, it wasn’t until after the Bouquet and Garter Toss things got crazy.

For the Bouquet Toss Brittany selected selected “Hollaback Girl” - Gwen Stefani which really started to build energy into the room. Matthew chose a song we have NEVER used before for the Garter Toss “Whatta Man” by Salt N’ Pepa which tore the house down. From that moment it must have been at least 200 people on the dance floor until the end. Matthew and Brittany gave us great music suggestions for their group of people and we were able to utilize their selection to keep the energy. We played everything from “GDFR” to “Brass Monkey”. We were all over the place but didn’t miss a beat! Tommy did an incredible job working the lights to bring energy to the floor and and his DJ set was on point. What few people know/understand is that DJs feed off that energy to create the evening. (maybe I’ll write an article explaining that). Of course it wouldn’t be a New Orleans’ wedding if their wasn’t a Second Line Parade. Nearly everyone in the building had their handkerchiefs or napkins strutting their stuff for Rebirth Brass Band’s “Let’s Go Get Em’”.
